CCA’s Illustration program shines in national illustration competition

Fifteen works from 11 CCA students were selected for this year’s Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition Exhibit, on view now.

The Society of Illustrators chose artworks from 11 outstanding CCA undergraduate students for its 2020 Student Scholarship Competition Exhibit.

“The Society of Illustrators is the oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to the art of illustration in America,” says Owen Smith, chair of CCA’s Illustration program, “and its annual Student Scholarship Competition is widely recognized as a launching pad for top young illustrators.”

More than 2,200 students at 74 colleges and universities nationwide participated in this year’s competition. Of their more than 8,700 entries, only 329 works—including 15 from the 11 CCA students—were selected for exhibition by a jury of professional illustrators and art directors, based on the quality of technique, concept, and skill of medium used. Additionally, CCA’s Vanessa Lim (BFA Illustration 2020) was one of only 32 students awarded a scholarship, winning the $1,000 FoTN Award for her digital piece, Evil Fart Comic.

“We’re so proud of all of the work that the Illustration program students submitted and are honored to have 15 pieces from our immensely talented cohort selected for this year’s exhibit,” Smith says.
