CCA’s fall 2020 semester: Maximum Impact, Minimum Contact

As the college moves toward a hybrid fall 2020 semester, we’re sharing details about our plans to keep students, faculty, and staff safe while living, learning, teaching, and working together on campus.

On Monday, July 20, CCA announced thatfor the safety of our students, faculty, and staffthe entire fall 2020 semester will be conducted remotely. This difficult decision was made following guidance from the San Francisco Department of Public Health that prohibited our return to in-person instruction and a recent surge of COVID-19 cases across California and the United States.

June 29, 2020:
As the CCA community prepares for a safe return to living, learning, teaching, and working together on our campuses in fall 2020, the college has been hard at work to find creative approaches and devise new protocols that fully support making and maintain the most vibrant aspects of campus life while avoiding opportunities for the spread of COVID-19.

With health and safety as our first and foremost concern, the goal has always been to ensure that our community has the minimum amount of contact with the virus, which means closely following physical distancing recommendations. But in planning for the fall, staff and faculty are making sure that those measures don’t come at the expense of meaningful interaction with one another.

The fall semester will feature a mix of online and hybrid (part in-person, part online) instruction in order to maximize student access to the college’s shared studios, labs, shops, and workspaces. By limiting on-campus coursework to curriculum that can only be provided effectively in person, the CCA community can continue to practice physical distancing while safely sharing many of these invaluable spaces and tools. The hybrid semester also provides increased flexibility for students who are unable to attend classes in person or who choose to take classes entirely remotely this fall.

CCA’s approach for fall 2020 has been developed in close consultation with health officials, and the college will continue to move forward in alignment with the latest public health mandates and recommendations and evolving understanding of the virus. With this in mind, our plans are intentionally flexible and may shift as health recommendations and circumstances change. We’ll continue to provide updates to our community at the collegewide and program-specific level throughout the summer.
